Type of seminar: Open - Instrument Centered (Cretan Lute)
Level of Participants: All levels are welcome
The traditional music of Crete rests on simple but profound forms which lend to it a sound both primordial and immediate. It is these forms which comprise the foundations of Cretan music and which are balanced in a very precise and delicate manner which, if lost, results in all of the magic of the tradition being lost.
As a result, it is supremely important for whoever wishes to delve into this music, that they pass through a very specific and somewhat austere regimen of training in which considerable attention is afforded to even the minutest of details and movements as it is from precisely these details that the unique color and character of this music arises.
Giorgis Xylouris (Psarogiorgis), perhaps more than any other contemporary Cretan artist, has immersed himself for many decades now in the study of the intricacies of Cretan music, resulting in his playing we can discern a quality both timeless and superbly balanced.
In this seminar he will share his knowledge and experience with his students with the intent that they should not only learn the melodies and forms of Cretan music, but that special attention should also be given to even the simplest of details which are crucial to the production of the authentic and idiomatic sound so characteristic of this tradition.
