The distinguished violinist Michalis Kouloumis, invites us to the colourful world of Eastern Mediterranean music through the musical spectrum of Violin.
The workshop will be focusing on the violin playing in Eastern Mediterranean music, as developed in Classical music of Constantinople (Ottoman Art music) and Greek/Turkish Traditional music (Asia Minor, Thrace, Greek Islands, Kappadokia, Black Sea,Cyprus).
Through hand-picked pieces from the above repertoire, Michalis Kouloumis will be studying the characteristics / techniques of the violin playing, such as:
-Ornaments (ghost notes, motifs)
-Rhythm – Groove
-Bow techniques (ponticello, bow lift, legato variations)
-Rhythmic beats (5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 9/4, 10/8, 11/8)
-Modal Improvisation (rhythmical and taksim)
Intermediate, Advanced, Professional level
A basic level of sight reading is needed for the workshop.
Michalis Kouloumis, has collaborated and performed with some of the most important representatives of the Mediterranean music scene. He currently teaches Violin, Makam theory and Modal Improvisation at Codarts, University for the Arts in Rotterdam.
