Type of Seminar: Open- Music Group
Level of participants: Intermediate
Sight Reading: useful, but students experienced and skilled in learning by ear will not be excluded
The seminar will mainly focus on the melodic and rhythmic form of the ‘syrtos’ and the way that is encountered, as a special idiom, in the different geographical regions of the island (from the West to the East).
Additionally, the study of the older musical performers will reveal their different approach; the differences & similarities on their performance, depending on the place of their origin.
We will study the ‘Syrtos’ through the relevant repertoire that will highlight the complexity of its form by using music sheets or by developing the skill of identifying melodic lines with the ear. This repertoire will also be framed with instrument techniques that will be needed to understand the different ways of performance.
Among the goals of this seminar is the general knowledge of
- the rest of the melodies of Cretan Music (kontilies, pidichtos, susta, pentozali),&
- the techniques and finger-bow exercises, etc. which are also useful for developing the performance of the Cretan Lyra.
It would be extremely important for the participation, if the students have a minimum level of technique on the lyra, which will help them to perform in comfort. We also encourage the participation with other instruments that are related to this type of music such as Laouto, Mandolin, Violin, wind instruments or percussion at a technical level that will make the daily attendance and understanding of the seminar comfortable for the participants.
