The process of composing in Makams is radically different from that of composing in not only western forms but also from that of many other modal musical genres. The interaction which takes place between given and newly formed phrase material and rhythmic patterns must necessarily strike a careful balance between that which is specific and recognizable and that which is truly inspired and original. This balance comes through a deep familiarity and connection with the inherent phrase material, which constitutes an integral part of each and every makam, as well as through the means of a free imagination which is nurtured by this material and not hindered or cramped by it. Admittedly this balance is particularly difficult to achieve and it comes as a result of a long and often arduous quest. We all have to start somewhere…
