In this seminar, the oud will be studied as it is presented in the broader region of the Eastern Mediterranean.This particular geographical area is known for a distinctive musical tradition, in which the oud plays a central role. Naturally, the musical role, timbre, repertoire, and even the tuning of the instrument varies across the different regions.
The purpose of the seminar is to explore these various aspects of the instrument, focusing specifically on the diverse repertoire it can perform.This repertoire includes both scholarly and folk traditions with deep roots, as well as newer compositions.
Additionally, taximi—musical improvisation on the oud, as it is practiced in the Eastern Mediterranean—will be a key part of the instruction.
In particular, the daily sessions of the seminar will cover topics such as oud technique, interpretative and performance approaches to the repertoire, and discussions on the modality of the region’s musical tradition.
