Departing from the rich musical tradition of Southern Italy, participants are invited to explore the capabilities of the vocal mechanism through familiarization with fundamental techniques that can enrich their performance. Mechanisms of breathing, sound production and articulation, resonators, and laryngeal registers, along with their correlation with formants, become the subject of experiential exploration, applied sometimes soloistically and sometimes within a polyphonic ensemble. The workshop's repertoire focuses on polyphonic songs from the Salento region («canti alla stisa») with diverse themes, songs in the Griko dialect of Grecìa Salentina, as well as pizzica pizzica dances, a type of tarantella rooted in the phenomenon of tarantism. The aim of the workshop is to study the repertoire of Southern Italy’s musical tradition, while approaching the vocal idiom as it is preserved and taught today in the villages of Salento. Within this framework, emphasis is placed on exploring personal vocal timbre and the potential for vocal expression.
Together with the vocal seminar, a part will be focusing on the Southern Italian Frame Drum (Tamburello). This introduction to the tamburello, exploring its role in accompanying the singing of pizzica pizzica, with a particular emphasis on the tradition of using the voice and tamburello as the sole elements of performance (pizzica a botta). Instruments will be provided for students who do not have their own.
