Sight Reading: elementary knowledge of reading music

The purpose of the Arabic music seminar is to introduce students, who interested in middle East music in general, to basic elements which characterize the aesthetic of Arabic music. The approach that will be followed will have dual direction of processing in theory as well as in practice since the peculiarity of Arabic music is identified in both maqam theory and interpretation of musical themes and improvisation.
Specifically, during the seminar there will be examined topics such as:
- improvisation (taqasim) by focusing in the way musical ideas are developed, usage of a rhythmical system throughout phrasing and tools of embellishment in order to decode the manner of interpretating and the aesthetic of Arabic music.
- Arabic maqam. Getting familiarized with tetrachords (jins), melodic course (sayr). In this subject, placing intervals, basic modulations and options of using multiple tetrachords within a maqam. Parallel viewing of common elements with the Turkish musical theory system to some degree will offer comparative study that will help to widen the student’s perspective of middle eastern music.
- Repertoire and musical forms used to Arabic music. Students at this point will have the opportunity to learn important terminology which identify several types of repertoires within the Arabic world, compositional characteristics, particular instruments’ roles, common elements of arrangements and yet social and other factors which shaped partially Arabic music through history.

The seminar is oriented towards to instruments such as the oud, qanun, violin (tuning the violin as Sol-Re-Sol-Re by droping the two highest strings La & Mi a tone down in order to adapt the Arabic violin tuning is kindly requested), nay, cello, Arabic bouzouq, percussion as well as western type of instruments like accordion, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone.

Notation of pieces, written notes and exercises will be submitted, therefore elementary knowledge of reading music will be useful but absolutely necessary, while many of the information given will be in a practical way for the sake of ear-training.
