In this workshop we will study songs and melodies from the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, arranged for vocal ensemble. Treating the voice as a musical instrument, we will explore the possibilities and limits of the human voice, forming an orchestra of voices.

Level of participants: Intermediate -advanced

(for students who are in an intermediate/ advanced level with their instruments, not necessary with a background in Makam)

Suitable for students who come from different music genres and want to enter the modal music (turkish makam and Azeri mugam).

The seminar will focus on Old & new compositions for the Cretan Laouto,  the students will work as well on different rhythmic motif , melodic phrases, tunings, techniques and exercises.

Departing from the rich musical tradition of Southern Italy, participants are invited to explore the capabilities of the vocal mechanism through familiarization with fundamental techniques that can enrich their performance.

Participant Level: Intermediate, Participants will be required to have at least a basic knowledge of Turkish/Arabic makam (or also Persian Dastgah) as well as a basic to medium level of playing a suitable instrument as a prerequisite to joining this seminar.

Sight Reading: Necessary

One of the aspects of makam music which is of greatest interest is the way in which all of the makams interact with one another in what is quite literally a labyrinth of different combinations and configurations.

The seminar will focus on frame drums and the special style of playing that Zohar Fresco has introduced.

Reading sheets: Sheets will be used extensively, but students experienced and skilled in learning by ear will not be excluded

The Lavta seminar will focus on technique, improvisation as well as on aspects of the old and new repertoire which Periklis Pqpqpetropoulos has greatly helped to develop.

Sight reading: partitions will be used extensively, the students who can play by ear are welcome too.

The seminar will focus on the folk and urban repertoire for the lyra of Istanbul, as well as the different techniques developed for its 'historical' and contemporary repertoire.

Sight reading: nesessary (medium level)

In this seminar, the oud will be studied as it is presented in the broader region of the Eastern Mediterranean. This particular geographical area is known for a distinctive musical tradition, in which the oud plays a central role.

Level of participants: Intermediate

This seminar is suitable for those with a background in Smyrnaic and rebetiko music who wish to study it further through the lens of its great performers, as well as for those who wish to familiarize themselves with this musical genre and its techniques.

Sight Reading: not necessary

From the female immigrant singers in America (such as Papagika, Vaka, and Magidou) to the great voices of urban, rebetiko, and Smyrnaic song during the interwar period in Athens, Thessaloniki, and beyond (including Roza Eskenazi, R. Ambatzi, and Marika Politissa), as well as the legendary Lavrentia Bernidakis from Rethymno, Crete—these artists are the most significant representatives of the late rebetiko era and the early post-war years of the later folk song tradition (Ninou, Bellou, Haskil, Georgakopoulou, and others).
