In this seminar we will focus on compositions coming from a variety of epochs which demonstrate the musical richness of different cultures and gives us the possibility to combine different instruments in varied style.
Many techniques that we use on the Kanun can also be interpreted to different instruments and to voice.
By using the MES(H)K system, we will discover how music pieces could be played with or without scores as well as we will work on Solfege, and understand the rhythm and the way we sing and play the music pieces.

The goal of these workshops is the experimentation within the field of the so-called “modal music”, which bases its structure on certain modes, rules and aesthetics of very specific and well-defined movements and ornamentation. With these premises, we analyze pieces belonging to the traditions that use these systems: Greek, Turkish, Iranian, Arabic, Azeri, Armenian, Kurdish, Indian, Afghan music… both in their melodic and rhythmic aspects.

Throughout classes, the pieces studied will cover the various forms of the Afghan repertoire: from classical instrumental compositions, delving into the intricacies of Hindustani raga (melodic modes) and tala (rhythmic modes) ocean, through the ghazal of Kabul and the beauty of classical Persian poetry, to the rich Afghan folk music with its many colours and other types of songs.
