Type of Seminar: Open - Music Group
Participant Level: Intermediate
Scores are given - Knowledge of music writing is necessary
In this seminar, Efren Lopez will work on the creation of new compositions together with the students as well as performing with them already existing works of particular interest. He will also guide them through the intricate process of combining instruments which perhaps have never before played together into a harmonious ensemble.
With this premise, we analyze pieces belonging to traditions that use these systems: Greek, Turkish, Iranian, Arabic, Azeri, Indian, Afghan... working in both directions, melodic and rhythmic.
Upon analyzing this material we can subsequently create our own compositions, arrangements, and improvisations, using intervals, odd rhythmic patterns and other features not common in the traditions of Western Europe.
The basic elements with which we work are:
-Rhythmic patterns: notions of odd rhythmic patterns (5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/16, 13/16, 15/16 ...) coming from the Ottoman Usul theory, as well as from the Balkans, Greece, and Iran, through their group practice.
-Introduction to the Indian Tala rhythmic concept.
-Introduction to Turkish Makam, closely related Arabic Makam, Persian Dastgah, and Byzantine Ihoi, analyzing some of their modes.
-Introduction to the Raga modal system used mostly in India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
To participate in this workshop we recommend, although not essential, to have a basic knowledge of reading notes. You can attend the workshop with any percussion or melodic instrument, including singers.
Seminars of all types include ten 3-hour courses and the timetable is defined in consultation with the teacher in the first lesson!
