Evgenios Voulgaris | The Works of D. Kantemir

Voulgaris 2Type of seminar: Open - Music Group

Level of Participants: Intermediate

Scores will be used as a melodic guide, a basic knowledge of reading music will be very helpful for those wishing to actively participate in the seminar.

In this seminar, the compositions from the collection of Kantemir will be examined as a reference point for the study of Makam (modes) and Ûsül (rhythmic cycles) with the purpose of understanding the aesthetics of early Ottoman music. Perhaps the oldest bowed instrument of Ottoman music, the rebab, will be used as a reference instrument.

The seminar will be open to all musicians who play instruments with the capability of producing the intervals specific to the Makam system, including the voice, as well as to musicians who play percussion instruments (eg. bendir, tombak, küdüm), given that the seminar will also focus on the rhythmic cycles (ûsül) of early Ottoman music.

Seminars of all types include ten 3-hour courses and the timetable is defined in consultation with the teacher in the first lesson!
