The Ney is the basic musical instrument of several great traditions such as the Persian, the Arabic and the Ottoman/Turkish. Through the ages, it has never ceased to surprise and affect emotionally its listeners with the simplicity of its construction and the depth of its sound.
However, it has in recent years been used in several musical environments distant from its roots, in almost the entire context of the world of contemporary modal (and not only) music (Greece, the Balkans, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Tuva, Indonesia, China, Japan, sub-Saharan Africa, Western Europe-local and national traditions, medieval music, contemporary classical music, improvisational music-, North America-blues, jazz-, Latin America).
Has the Ney the ability to approach all these enormously varied genres of music? If yes, does it really make any sense? And if yes, is this a Ney?
In this seminar, we will discover the ways and techniques to approach different music traditions, through the Ney.
