Giorgos Manolakis was born in Heraklion, Crete in 1982. He started practicing the laouto at the age of 8 under the guidance of his father, Kostas Manolakis, who was one of the foremost laouto players of his generation.

Six years later he started practicing the bouzouki with many great masters of the instrument (Kostas Trikalis, Andreas Stefanakis, Iosif Kerpelis). At the age of 16 he started playing mostly Rebetiko songs in local music scenes. Apart from Laouto and Bouzouki he is playing mandolin, tzoura, baglama, guitar and Bulgari.

His first official presence in the Greek music scene was with the group ‘Hainides’ with whom he collaborated on two of their albums (O giteftis & to drakodonti, Karagiozis in Eurovision). He has collaborated with many other musicians and composers such as: Ross Daly, Naseer Shamma, Psarantonis, Sokratis Malamas, Zohar Fresco etc.

He had released five personal albums (To Spathi, Ditto, Kokkines Plakes, Nefalo & Ta prepi de mou prepoune) and also leads other personal musical projects such as Couleur Locale and Nefalo. He is collaborating as well with Labyrinth Musical Workshop as a teacher for laouto workshops. Giorgos Manolakis is one of the most dynamic representatives of the new generation musicians and he presents to us, his own approach to Cretan music adding different influences in the form of improvisations.
